5-Day Sahara Tour from Marrakech to the South

Today we will depart Marrakech in the morning for a deep dive into Morocco's true far south, well beyond the more commonly visited Merzouga dunes. We cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages, before continuing past Ouarzazate and turning south into the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, a green ribbon of date palm groves winding through an otherwise stark, rocky landscape flanked by dramatic kasbahs and fortified ksour villages. We pass through Agdz, a small oasis town known for its Wednesday market, before continuing to Zagora, historically the last major stopping point for camel caravans heading toward Timbuktu. We check in to a kasbah-style hotel for the night, with time to relax and enjoy the palm-shaded surroundings before continuing further south tomorrow, toward landscapes that very few visitors to Morocco ever see. Lunch in Agdz or Zagora today is a good opportunity to sample the Draa Valley's own local specialities before continuing south.

This morning we continue south along the Draa Valley, following the river as far as it goes before the landscape transitions fully into desert. We stop at Tinfou, home to a small but genuine set of dunes rising unexpectedly from the flat hamada plateau, a taste of what lies ahead. Continuing south, the palm groves become sparser and the settlements smaller and more remote as we approach M'Hamid el-Ghizlane, the last town before the true, uninhabited Sahara begins — this is genuinely the end of the paved road in this part of Morocco, and a place with a far more authentic, undeveloped desert atmosphere than the more-visited Merzouga area. Here, camel handlers meet us for a trek into the dunes surrounding M'Hamid, generally quieter and less visited than Erg Chebbi, with a real sense of remoteness and silence. We settle into our desert camp for the night, enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and gather around the campfire under a sky with minimal light pollution, offering some of the best stargazing conditions in the entire country. Lunch en route is typically a simple stop along the Draa Valley road, the settlements growing noticeably sparser the further south we travel.

For early risers, this morning offers a walk into the dunes at dawn to watch the sunrise over a genuinely remote stretch of the Sahara, with none of the crowds found at more popular desert access points. After a simple Berber breakfast at camp, we begin the drive back north, retracing the Draa Valley through M'Hamid and Zagora, with a stop if you wish at a roadside cooperative to see (and taste) some of the region's famous dates, a major local industry, before continuing on to Ouarzazate for the night, the 'Hollywood of Africa', where time permitting we visit the Atlas Film Studios or the Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family. This remote stretch of desert sees a fraction of the visitors that Merzouga does, and the resulting quiet is something many guests remember as the highlight of the entire trip.

This morning we visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar above the Ounila River and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, its dramatic silhouette having appeared in films including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. We take a guided walk through its narrow lanes up to the old communal granary at the top for panoramic views over the valley. After lunch, our driver begins the spectacular ascent of the Tizi n'Tichka Pass back over the High Atlas, with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages and mineral-rich rock formations — roadside stalls sell local geodes and amethyst. As the road descends toward Marrakech, we arrive in the late afternoon and check in to your riad, with the evening free to rest or take an early stroll toward Jemaa el-Fna square. Lunch today is usually taken in Ouarzazate before we continue toward Ait Ben Haddou and the return to Marrakech.

Our journey together comes to an end this morning. Depending on your flight time, you will have a final opportunity to enjoy breakfast on your riad's rooftop terrace, take a last unhurried walk through the medina, or pick up any remaining gifts — dates from the Draa Valley, argan oil, or handmade leather goods make excellent, easily packable souvenirs. At the appropriate time, your private driver will collect you and your luggage from the riad and transfer you directly to Marrakech Menara Airport, timed comfortably to your departure flight.
